Bekal Fort & Kasaragod: Kerala's Quiet Northern Coast

Aerial view of Kerala's coastline

Bekal Fort, in Kerala's northernmost district of Kasaragod, offers the same dramatic Arabian Sea coastline as Kovalam or Varkala — with almost none of the crowds. For travellers who've already seen the south and want an undiscovered stretch of coast, it's an easy recommendation.

Bekal Fort

One of Kerala's largest and best-preserved forts, its sea-facing ramparts give sweeping, uninterrupted Arabian Sea views. The fort and surrounding Bekal Beach have appeared in several Indian films, but remain far quieter than comparable southern coastal sites.

Valiyaparamba backwaters

A quieter, less-developed backwater system than Alleppey or Kumarakom, with houseboat and canoe options for travellers wanting the classic Kerala waterway experience without the crowds.

Ayurveda in Kasaragod

The district has fewer large resort-style Ayurveda centres than the south, but genuine practitioner-led options exist for guests prioritising an authentic, quiet setting over resort infrastructure.

Getting there

The nearest airports are Mangalore (about 1.5 hours) and Kannur (about 1.5-2 hours) — it's a longer transfer than the southern coastal belt, best suited to guests already in northern Kerala or planning a longer, multi-district trip.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is Bekal Fort worth the longer journey from the south?

If you've already visited Kovalam or Varkala and want a quieter, less touristic version of the same coastal drama, yes — Bekal offers comparable scenery with far fewer visitors.

How do I get to Kasaragod?

Mangalore Airport (about 1.5 hours) or Kannur Airport (about 1.5-2 hours) are the closest; it's a longer transfer from Kochi or Trivandrum.

Is Kasaragod good for a full Ayurveda programme, or just sightseeing?

It's better suited to guests prioritising a quiet, authentic setting with genuine local practitioners — the resort infrastructure is lighter than in the southern coastal belt.
